Prof. Andrea Alù has been awarded a Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) award on Attojoule Nanooptoelectronics, funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Prof. Alù and his team, formed by researchers from Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and international collaborators from Belgium and the Netherlands, were selected to work on the project "Ultralow Power, Ultrafast, Integrated Nano-optoelectronics".

Multidisciplinary University Initiative (MURI) efforts involve teams of researchers investigating high priority topics and opportunities that intersect more than one traditional technical discipline. Alù’s team will work on an ambitious 8.75M$, five-year basic-research program aimed at introducing and developing novel concepts to model, design, analyze, fabricate and characterize ultralow-power, ultrafast, high-density, compact, scalable optoelectronic nanodevices, and dense arrays of them, for the next generation of integrated nanophotonic systems.

Prof. Alù holds the Cockrell Family Dean’s Chair in Engineering Excellence Fellowship and is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

Alù was awarded the prestigious NSF Alan T. Waterman award in 2015, and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society (OSA) and the American Physical Society (APS). Among several awards and recognitions, he is the recipient of the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award in Engineering (2016), of the OSA Adolph Lomb Medal (2013), of the International Union of Radio Science’s Issac Koga Gold Medal (2011), and of the NSF CAREER Award (2010).
