WNCG Alum Derya Malak Wins Best Paper Award

Professor Derya Malak has won the Best Paper Award at the 20th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2022). Malak, who is currently an assistant professor in the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM, was recognized for her solo-authored paper, “Throughput and Energy Tradeoffs for Retransmission-based Random Access Protocols.” The paper extends work on the fundamentals of massive Internet of Things uplink communications that Malak conducted during her Ph.D. and in collaboration with Howard Huang of Nokia Bell Labs.

Zhiwen Fan Team Wins Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship

WNCG student Zhiwen Fan and his teammate Rishov Sarkar (Georgia Tech) were among the winners of this year's Qualcomm Innovation Fellowships for North America. The pair's winning project studied "Real-Time Visual Processing for Autonomous Driving via Video Transformer with Data-Model-Accelerator Tri-Design."

Nanshu Lu Promoted to Professor

WNCG faculty member Nanshu Lu is now a full professor in the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. Lu has been with The University of Texas since 2011; she also holds appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. She joined WNCG in 2018 and soon after served as a faculty co-organizer of the 2019 Texas Wireless Summit, "Connectivity and Sensing at the Human-Machine Frontier."

Brian Evans Receives Prestigious Civitatis Award

ECE students might have chatted with Prof. Brian Evans during his Friday coffee/advising hours, or in the new first-year graduate student mentoring program he coordinates, or in a student organization he advises. In weekly coffee hours, now running for 19 years, Prof. Evans has been providing a comfortable space for undergraduate and graduate students to talk about what’s on their mind and help each other. But his involvement extends further beyond the ECE department to the university community as a whole. And “whole” is what he strives to make our community.

New WNCG Affiliate Viavi Solutions Drives Academic and Industry Research

WNCG affiliate company Viavi Solutions today announced its new 6G Forward program, designed to "provide vital expertise, technology, and funding to promising avenues of research, which may lead to breakthroughs for the next generation of wireless technology." VIAVI joined WNCG's Industrial Affiliate Program this summer, supporting the newly-launched 6G@UT center.

Tianlong Chen Awarded Adobe Research Fellowship

Texas ECE PhD student Tianlong Chen has been awarded a 2022 Adobe Research Fellowship. Adobe created the Research Fellowship program to recognize outstanding graduate students anywhere in the world carrying out exceptional research in areas of computer science important to Adobe. Chen is one of only 10 Fellows for 2022. Chen received his BS from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2017 and joined Texas ECE in Fall 2018. He is supervised in Texas ECE by Prof. Atlas Wang.
