Prof. Al Bovik of Texas ECE along with former students Ming-Jun Chen and Che-Chun (Tony) Su and his collaborators Do-Kyoung Kwon (Texas Instruments) and Lawrence K. Cormack (UT-Austin’s Department of Psychology) have received he 2018 European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) Best Paper Award. The award recognizes their paper “Full-Reference Quality Assessment of Stereopairs Accounting for Rivalry,” Signal Processing: Image Communication, vol. 28, no. 10, pp. 1143-1155, October 2013. The honor is retrospective over the five years leading up to the award.

Prof. Bovik and his co-authors will receive the award at the 26th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2018) to be held in Rome, Italy from the 3rd to the 7th of September 2018.

EURASIP was founded on September 1, 1978 to "improve communication between groups and individuals that work within the multidisciplinary, fast growing field of Signal Processing in Europe and elsewhere, and to exchange and disseminate information in the field all over the world." The association exists "to further the efforts of researchers by providing a learned and professional platform for dissemination and discussion of all aspects of signal processing."

EUSIPCO is the flagship conference of EURASIP and offers "a comprehensive technical program addressing all the latest developments in research and technology for signal processing and its applications."

Prof. Al Bovik holds the Cockrell Family Endowed Regents Chair in Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is Director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE). Dr. Bovik received Television’s highest honor, an individual Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (The Television Academy) in October 2015, for his work on the development of video quality prediction models which have become standard tools in broadcast and post-production houses throughout the television industry. He has published over 750 technical articles in these areas and holds several U.S. patents. His publications have been cited more than 45,000 times in the literature, his current H-index is about 75, and he is listed as a Highly-Cited Researcher by Thompson Reuters. His several books include the companion volumes The Essential Guides to Image and Video Processing (Academic Press, 2009).

Ming-Jun Chen is currently an ML software engineer at Google. Ming-Jun Chen received his BS (2001) and MS (2003) in Computer Science and Engineering Department from the National Cheng-Kung University, Taiwan. After graduation, he joined CyberLink as a software engineer specializing in audio and video processing. In June 2008, he started his study in the University of Texas at Austin and obtained his Ph.D in 2012.

Che-Chun (Tony) Su is currently an applied scientist at Amazon Lab126. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering (2004) and MS in Communication Engineering (2006) from National Taiwan University and received his PhD in Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014.

Do-Kyoung Kwon is a technical staff member at Texas Instruments.

Lawrence K. Cormack is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Austin, and is an active member of the Center for Perceptual Systems. He received his B.S. with Highest Honors in Psychology from the University of Florida in 1986 and his Ph.D. in Physiological Optics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992.
