Dr. Derya Malak will begin the 2019-2020 school year as an Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. The tenure-track position at the private research university is within the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering.

Malak received her Ph.D. from Texas ECE in 2017 and was a member of WNCG under her advisor Prof. Jeff Andrews.

After obtaining her Ph.D., she conducted research with Prof. Edmund Yeh as a visiting scholar at Northeastern University. Most recently, Malak was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she worked with Prof. Muriel Médard.

In her first semester as RPI faculty, Malak will teach a senior-level undergraduate course on digital signal processing.

Her current research interests address distributed computation problems in networks in order to handle large-volume data with growing computational demand. She employs information theory and graph theory concepts to devise coding techniques for functional compression in networks.
