WNCG Alumni Ahmed Alkhateeb and Omar El-Ayach recently received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award for 2016. Their paper, “Channel Estimation and Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Cellular Systems,” originally appeared in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing in October 2014. Their co-authors on the project include their former advisor, Prof. Robert Heath, and Professor Geert Leus of Delft University of Technology. Dr. Alkhateeb is now a Wireless Communications Researcher at Facebook and Dr. El-Ayach is now a Wireless Systems Engineer with Google.

Founded as IEEE’s first society in 1948, the Signal Processing Society is the world’s premier association for signal processing engineers and industry professionals. The Society features a membership base of over 19,000 engineers, academics and industry professionals and students and spans 100 countries worldwide. Each year the Society organizes numerous conferences around the world, focusing on the innovations that shape the future of signal processing and our world. The Society also oversees the publication of numerous periodicals, including the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and the Inside Signal Processing eNewsletter.

The awards ceremony will take place at the IEEE Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Society President Rabab Ward will present the award.
