The University of Texas Graduate Engineering Council hosted their annual Graduate and Industry Networking event (GAIN) on February 5.

AUSTIN, Texas — Three researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have been selected by the Department of Defense to lead Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) projects, receiving grants totaling $22.7 million to help advance innovative technologies in energy, computing and nanoelectronics.

Prof. Andrea Alù has been awarded a Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) award on Attojoule Nanooptoelectronics, funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Prof. Alù and his team, formed by researchers from Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and international collaborators from Belgium and the Netherlands, were selected to work on the project "Ultralow Power, Ultrafast, Integrated Nano-optoelectronics".

As mobile wireless communications progress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is exploring technologies that could lead to the emergence of a new generation of millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless spectrum by the year 2020. Before mmWave carrier frequencies can be applied to cellular networks, spectrum allocations and regulatory frameworks must be determined. 

In recognition of his outstanding performance as a summer intern, Qualcomm awarded WNCG Ph.D. student Tianyang Bai the Roberto Padovani Fellowship.  The fellowship was created in 2008 to recognize Qualcomm’s corporate research and development interns who demonstrate superior technical performance during their summer internship. Roberto Padovani was Qualcomm’s chief technology officer for nearly 10 years and was a leading innovator for the company.
