Prof. Jeff Andrews and Prof. Robert Heath of Texas ECE have been named co-recipients of the 2019 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award for their contributions to wireless communication systems. The IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award is an IEEE Technical Field Award, meaning it spans all subfields of electrical engineering. It was established in 2001 to recognize "outstanding contributions to technologies holding the promise of innovative applications." The award is sponsored by Dr. Kiyo Tomiyasu, the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, and the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society.

Prof. Al Bovik of Texas ECE has been named the 2019 recipient of the IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing. The IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing was established in 2012 and is awarded to an individual or team based on "impact on the field of signal processing technology, including innovation; leadership; honors or seminal contributions as evidenced by publications or patents or transition to practice; and quality of nomination." Robert Heath, Texas ECE professor, has received the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) 2017 Technical Achievement Award for Significant Contributions to Signal Processing in MIMO Communication Systems. EURASIP serves to further the efforts of researchers by providing a learned and professional platform for dissemination and discussion of all aspects of signal processing.

Robert Heath, Texas ECE professor, has received the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) 2017 Technical Achievement Award for Significant Contributions to Signal Processing in MIMO Communication Systems. Texas ECE alumnus Dimitris S. Papailiopoulos has received a 2015 Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award for a paper co-authored with Texas ECE Associate Professor Alex Dimakis entitled "Interference Alignment as a Rank Constrained Rank Minimization." The award was presented at the Society’s awards ceremony at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in Shanghai, China.

Prof. Robert Heath has been elected to server on the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors. The IEEE's first society, the Signal Processing Society is the world’s premier professional society for signal processing scientist and professionals since 1948.
