As the new academic year begins, WNCG welcomes a new faculty member. Assistant Professor Aryan Mokhtari joins the group, having worked most recently as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) at MIT. He was one of nine new faculty to join Texas ECE this fall.

Mokhtari received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in electrical and systems engineering. He also received the A.M. in statistics from the Wharton School. Mokhtari later was a Research Intern with the Big-Data Machine Learning Group at Yahoo!, Sunnyvale, CA.

This semester, Mokhtari can be found teaching a Texas ECE graduate course on Convex Optimization. His current research projects focus on the theory and applications of convex and non-convex optimization in large-scale machine learning and data science problems. His work has garnered a number of awards and fellowships, including Penn’s Joseph and Rosaline Wolf Award for Best Doctoral Dissertation in electrical and systems engineering and the Simons-Berkeley Fellowship.

In addition to joining WNCG, Mokhtari has also become a member of UT-MINDS, a WNCG-based initiative in Machine Intelligence and Decision Systems directed by Prof. Joydeep Ghosh.

“I am very excited to join the faculty at the ECE Department of UT Austin, and to be a member of WNCG and UT-MINDS,” Mokhtari stated. “WNCG has been a longtime leader in producing pioneering works on topics such as wireless networking, communications and data science and has been very successful in collaborating with industry leaders through the Industrial Affiliates Program.”

Mokhtari cited WNCG’s collaborative environment as a unique aspect of the center, adding, “I am very delighted to be a member of the team and look forward to working alongside this amazing group of scholars and students.”

Welcome to WNCG, Prof. Mokhtari!
