Prof. Jeff Andrews and his former PhD student and Texas ECE alumnus Harpreet Dhillon have been named recipients of the 2016 IEEE Communications Society Heinrich Hertz Award for Best Communications Letter. The award is given to "an outstanding manuscript published in any letter journal financially sponsored or co-sponsored by the Communications Society during the previous 3 calendar years which opens new lines of research, envisions bold approaches to communication, formulates new problems to solve, and essentially enlarges the field of communications engineering.”  They were recognized for their paper “Downlink Rate Distribution in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks under Generalized Cell Selection”, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, Volume 3, No. 1, pp. 42-45, February 2014.

Jeff and Harpreet will receive the award at the IEEE ICC 2016  conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late May.

Prof. Jeff Andrews holds the The Cullen Trust for Higher Education Endowed Professorship in Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Andrews received the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2007 and has been co-author of ten best paper award recipients: ICC 2013, Globecom 2006 and 2009, Asilomar 2008, European Wireless 2014, the 2010 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award, the 2011 IEEE Heinrich Hertz Prize, the 2014 EURASIP Best Paper Award, the 2014 IEEE Stephen O. Rice Prize, and the 2014 IEEE Leonard G. Abraham Prize.  He is an IEEE Fellow and an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society.
