Prof. Robert Heath Moderates Brooklyn 5G Summit Panel
5G technology will play a major role in the future of automotive systems. Exactly how this technology will be implemented is still up for debate. To discuss current research and possible directions for 5G, industry experts met in New York for the Brooklyn 5G Summit in April 2016.
The annual summit, jointly organized by Nokia Networks, the NYU WIRELESS Center and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, discussed next steps for making 5G a commercial reality, which includes channel models, millimeter wave communication, regulatory aspects and the evolving Internet-of-Things (IoT) space.
WNCG Prof. Robert Heath moderated a panel that discussed the interplay between 5G and automotive systems. Other panel experts included: Gaurav Bansal, Senior Researcher at Toyota Infotechnology Center, Geoff Waters, Senior Principal Engineer at NXP, Roger Nichols, the 5G Program Manager at Keysight Technologies and Gerhard Fettweis, Vodafone Chair Professor at TU Dresden.
The panel discussed the future of 5G for the automotive industry and the value of communication and communication infrastructure for vehicle automation. Panel experts also debated whether 5G could solve problems that Dedicated Short Range Communication and 4G have left unresolved. The panel concluded with questions from the audience and online observers.
Brooklyn 5G Summit 2016 brought together wireless and mobile industry leaders from business, government and academia to explore the future of 5G wireless. The Summit served as a forum to discuss trends, discover what’s hot and what’s not, and determine the best ways to move towards understanding and developing the world’s 5G future. The event featured keynote speakers, oral presentations, poster sessions and exhibits on 5G technology, and specifically focused on their relevance in IoT.
The event also featured speakers from among the ranks of WNCG’s Industrial Affiliates program, including speakers from Samsung, Qualcomm, AT&T and Huawei, as well as NYU Wireless’ current director and WNCG founding director, Prof. Ted Rappaport.
“The timing for this panel could not be better,” Prof. Heath states. “WNCG is in the process of kicking off the Center for Situation-Aware Vehicular Engineering Systems (SAVES), which will bring together leaders in automotive systems and wireless communications.”
Events like the 5G Summit help lay the foundation for the research and industry relations that make such centers a reality.
