Since 2008, mobile traffic across the globe has increased at a rate of roughly 100 percent per year, while the available bandwidth, or spectrum, for data use has remained largely unchanged. During peak hours, wireless networks in major cities often reach a point of failure. With the explosion in online video traffic, which is predicted to occupy 66 percent of mobile traffic by 2017, industry, academia and government are searching for the future of mobile networks. The solution? To push beyond 4G networks and bring 5G to life and to consumers.
Texas Wireless Summit (TWS) 2015 will explore next generation wireless networks in a day-long event focused on The View to 5G: From Applications to the Air Interface. This week, TWS organizers released the lineup of keynote speakers, which includes two world-renowned researchers and industry experts, Gerhard Fettweis of TU Dresden and Tom Marzetta of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. Gerhard Fettweis, the visionary behind “The Tactile Internet,” will speak about the fundamental changes 5G networks will require versus 4G networks to support the applications of the 2020’s. Dr. Fettweis’ rare blend of expertise spans circuit design, communication theory and networking, and gives him unmatched insight into future wireless system design. His lab has produced over 10 startup companies in the telecommunications space and has made seminal theoretical contributions to wireless communication systems.
Tom Marzetta pioneered Massive MIMO in the late 2000’s, which is now viewed as an indispensable technology for 5G. His early work on Massive MIMO received the 2013 IEEE Marconi Award and the 2015 IEEE Baker Prize, which is given to the most outstanding paper published over all IEEE journals in the preceding 5 years, as well as the 2014 Thomas Edison Patent Award. Dr. Marzetta is a Bell Labs and IEEE Fellow and leads massive MIMO research at Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs.
This year's event is chaired by WNCG Profs. Jeff Andrews and Robert Heath, who are both leading experts and researchers in the field of 5G and explore topics related to Massive MIMO, mmWave and other 5G issues.
