WNCG's Prof. Jeff Andrews has been named as a recipient of a 2021 Qualcomm Faculty Award. The Qualcomm Faculty Award (QFA) "supports key professors and their research through a $75,000 charitable donation to their university. The goal of the QFA funding is to strengthen Qualcomm’s engagement with faculty who are playing a key role in our recruiting of top graduate students."

The European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) has announced the winners of the 2020 Best Paper Awards. Two of the four winning papers were written by WNCG faculty members with their students and postdoctoral fellows.  EURASIP-sponsored journals each give their own award—either annually or biennially, depending on the number of papers published per year. A sub-committee for each journal evaluates the papers according to relevance, quality, style, and originality in order to select a winner.

Five WNCG faculty members were among the top 100 most influential scholars on the AI 2000 lists. The rankings are based on the Tsinghua AMiner academic data, which indexes more than 133 million expert profiles and 270 million publications. Jeffrey Andrews and Robert Heath came in at the top of the Most Influential Scholars in the Internet of Things category, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Recognized as Honorable Mentions for Internet of Things were Sriram Vishwanath at No. 82 and Constantine Caramanis at No. 90.

WNCG professor Todd Humphreys has received the Institute of Navigation’s (ION) “highest honor.” Humphreys was elected to the membership rank of Fellow at ION’s International Technical Meeting in January. He is one of only three recipients of the honor for 2020. Humphreys’ election cited his “significant and fundamental contributions to PNT security and precise GNSS positioning for the mass market, and for dedication to GNSS education and outreach.”

Every Spring, Texas ECE’s Awards Banquet celebrates the achievements of the department’s outstanding students and faculty. Three WNCG members were among those honored at this year’s event, which was held last week on May 6. WNCG Student Ahmed Kord won the prestigious Graduate Student Excellence Award for 2018-2019. The department confers this prize annually on one graduate student who has demonstrated “high academic achievement in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.”

Dr. François Baccelli, the Simons Chair in Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, has been selected to receive the 2014 ACM SIGMETRICS Achievement award. Dr. Baccelli is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and a cutting edge researcher at the intersection of mathematics, telecommunications, and information theory. He joined UT Austin in August 2012 from the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, where he was director of computer science research.

Prof. Sriram Vishwanath has received the Longhorn Entrepreneurship Agency 2014  Entrepreneur of the Year award. Sriram has served as an advisor to Lynx Labs, a startup launched by UT students. The company makes a camera and software that can capture environments in 3-D. Vishwanath also advises M87, a company run by engineering graduate students. It has developed patented technology to boost the performance of wireless networks.

UT ECE professor Dr. Al Bovik has been named the recipient of the IEEE Signal Processing Society  2013 Society Award for "fundamental contributions to digital image processing theory, technology, leadership and education." The Society Award honors outstanding technical contributions in a field within the scope of the Signal Processing Society and outstanding leadership within that field. In addition to receiving the Society Award, Dr. Bovik was author on two IEEE Signal Procssing Best Papers for 2013.
