First-year graduate student Joshua Ebenezer has received the Nilanjan Ganguly Memorial Award for his undergraduate thesis on haze- and fog-affected images and videos. The award designates the “best B.Tech thesis in the Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering Department” at IIT Khargapur and is given annually to a single student. The award also includes a cash prize for the recipient from the Ganguly family. 

WNCG Alumnus Vishal Monga has led two teams of researchers to success at the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement (NTIRE) worldwide competition. Monga received his Ph.D.EE from Texas ECE in 2005, advised by Prof. Brian L. Evans at WNCG. He now runs the Information Processing & Algorithms Laboratory at Penn State’s College of Engineering and holds the title of Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The Data-Supported Transportation Operations and Planning Center (D-STOP) from UT Austin met with representatives from local and state government, academia and industry in early April at a symposium designed to collaborate on the future of Smart Cities. The day-long event explored smart transportation systems, collaborative ecosystems, infrastructure-based technology, regional planning and analytics and connected vehicles through a series of panels featuring experts in the field.

WNCG Industrial Affiliates, faculty and students come together for an annual event focused on WNCG's greatest resource; a collection of some of the world's brightest students. Open House provides recruitment opportunities to Industrial Affiliate Members through close access to WNCG student research and resumes, as well as creates opportunities for one-on-one meetings with WNCG students. 

This year, five WNCG alumni and postdoctoral fellows accepted faculty positions throughout the country. Their acceptance continues the recent wave over the last few years of WNCG students and postdoctoral fellows finding permanent homes at some of the world’s leading institutions. WNCG student Debarati Kundu and her advisor, Prof. Brian Evans, have been selected for a top 10% paper award for the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2015. The conference will take place in Quebec City, Canada in September. The paper "Full-Reference Visual Quality Assessment for Synthetic Images: A Subjective Study" deals with conducting a series of subjective experiments to aid in better understanding how humans perceive synthetic images encountered in computer graphics.

Just like Edison turned on the light bulb, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG) at UT Austin are switching kids on to the field of engineering. Part of a STEM program geared towards middle school and high school students, the Edison Lecture Series celebrates fun over fundamentals and enables kids to have fun with science.
